L’Asphyxie
Carrots were part of our dinner that night. Suddenly, from my bed, I started screaming. “I can’t breathe! Help! I’m dying.” My parents came running, as fearful as I was. “I’m choking! A carrot piece is stuck in my throat!” I was in a world of terror. What had happened? With tubes down my throat at the hospital with my pediatrician father, nothing was ever found. Psychosis? That is a tricky word to use for children, so prone to alternate realities. It took me 8 months to get over that aberration. When I had, I was feeding myself. Stuck at Erik Erikson’s Stage 3: Initiative vs. Guilt, I had tried to manipulate Mother but she decoupled from my game. Oedipal Complex? Daddy was waiting for me as I made Mommy grumpy. Clever kids.
Petit malin.
I do not remember ever choking until last month when I was sitting on a rock enjoying a picnic with my family. A bite of one of the snacks got stuck in my throat – what an awful feeling it was: unable to cough it up and unable to breathe! I gestured to my companions to bang me on my back – thank goodness they did, for at last the offending food became dislodged and I was able to breathe and swallow again! That brief experience gave me enormous insight into COVID-19 patients struggling to breathe without the aid of ventilators. How thankful I was to be able to continue enjoying the mountain scenery after only a few moments!
